Following the New Cross Fire on 18th January 1981 which killed 14 young people attending Yvonne Ruddock’s 16th birthday party the Black community mobilised and organised to respond to this outrage which was considered a racist attack. The New Cross Massacre Action Committee organised a campaign for justice and launched the Black Peoples Day of Action on Monday 2nd March 1981 where 20,000 people brought London to a standstill . On that day John La Rose chair of NMAC delivered to the British Parliament the historic “Declaration of New Cross”. Vron Ware's powerful photos capture this important day in British history.
