The stately figures in Eldzier Cortors paintings embody the enduring black spirit he painted over more than fity years. Virginia-born Cortor (19162015) moved north with his family to escape southern racism. He found his artistic center early, first through exposure to African sculpture while attending the Art Institute of Chicago, and soon after while observing Sea Islands Gullah communities, whose flourishing culture and preserved heritage, despite a history of slavery, became Cortors muse.
